First I meet the student and establish trust and ease through friendly, relaxed conversation. Then I assess the students proficiency: I test his or her current speaking, listening, reading, and writing levels with basic, quick assessments. Through the process I identify the student's needs and goals, professional, travel, academic or conversation for general purposes. It s also important to know the student's learning style and where to put the most emphasis (visual, audio, text). I then plan lessons based on setting the context, highlighted specific target words or grammar, and then check for understanding. Each lesson is built on the previous one, so there is no "one and done", as students (and all human beings) forget some of what they have learned unless it is repeated and built upon. Most importantly is the level of trust and confidence that is created in the lessons between the teacher and the student, so that the student can feel free to take risks, make mistakes, and eventually build fluency in the target language. Exam skills are also taught through practice - whether Cambridge all levels, iGCSE, A levels or other diploma or certificate programs.
